It boasts ideal conditions for growing high-quality Arabica coffee, characterized by high altitudes, typically above 1,500 meters (4,921 feet), well-drained volcanic soils, and a highland tropical climate with consistent rainfall ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 millimeters (59 to 98 inches) over a nine-month period and optimum temperatures between 15 and 24°C (59 to 75°F). Within Oromia, various regions such as Sidamo, Yirgacheffe, Limu, Nekemte, and Harrar produce distinct Ethiopian coffee types. Oromia has a deep-rooted connection to coffee, with legends suggesting it as the birthplace of coffee. The coffee ceremony is an integral part of its culture, fostering social connections among its people.

What To Know When Buying Ethiopia Coffee?

Ethiopia coffee is a type of Arabica coffee celebrated for its unique flavors and deep cultural roots, tracing its history back to the ninth century in the Kafa Mountains. Central to Ethiopian culture, coffee ceremonies involve roasting green beans, grinding them manually, and brewing in a ‘jebena’ (clay pot), symbolizing social connection and hospitality. This rich tradition, evolving from legends of energetic goats discovering coffee berries, is reflected in today's diverse Ethiopian coffee profiles, from the strong first cup 'Abol' to the milder 'Baraka'. Drinking Ethiopian Arabica coffee may protect against cardiovascular disease, per a 2020 study by Gizaw Mamo Gebeyehu from Arsi University, involving 70 participants, which found higher serum FFAs and HDL, and lower TAGs.

How to Brew Ethiopian Coffee?

To brew Ethiopian coffee, start by using a medium-fine grind for your coffee beans. For the water, aim for a temperature of around 200°F (93°C). These two factors play a significant role in extracting the unique flavors found in Ethiopian coffee, such as blueberry, jasmine, and lemon. Ethiopian coffee can be brewed using different methods, but two popular options are the Drip method and the French press. In the Drip method, let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes to bring out those delightful flavors. French press brewing can also highlight the coffee's unique characteristics. Sidamo coffee can be used in espresso machines as well, but remember to adjust the grind size when using it for medium-light roast espresso. To keep your Ethiopian coffee beans fresh and flavorful, store them in a cool, dark place.
